Slate vs concrete roof tiles
How natural slate and concrete tiles compare on appearance, weight, lifespan and planning.
Appearance
Natural slate is the traditional covering on much of historic London. Concrete tiles look heavier and are rarely appropriate in conservation areas.
Weight
Concrete tiles are typically heavier than slate. Switching material can affect whether the roof structure needs strengthening.
Lifespan and cost
Natural slate usually costs more to buy and fit but lasts longer. Concrete tiles are cheaper up front.
Planning
In conservation areas or on listed buildings you may need consent to change roof material.
