Do I need planning permission for a new roof?
General guidance on like-for-like replacement, conservation areas and listed buildings.
Like-for-like
Replacing a roof covering like-for-like often doesn't need planning permission, but always check with the local planning authority.
Conservation areas and listed buildings
Much of the City of London is in conservation areas, and listed buildings need listed building consent for many roof works. Changing materials or the roof's appearance is likely to need consent.
Changing the shape
Dormers, raising the roof or adding roof terraces usually need permission.
Our role
We can advise on materials and details that suit your building, but confirm requirements with the City of London Corporation's planning team.
