Roof leaking? What to do in the first hour
Practical steps to limit damage from a roof leak and what a roofer will check when they arrive.
Limit the damage
Move furniture and electronics away from the drip, put down a bucket and towels, and switch off electrics near any water. If a ceiling is bulging, keep clear of it.
Don't go up on the roof
Wet slates and tiles are dangerous. A professional can make the roof safe with the right access equipment.
Where leaks usually come from
In our experience the most common causes are slipped slates, failed lead flashing around chimneys and walls, blocked gutters, and worn flat roof membranes. The wet patch inside is often some distance from the actual entry point.
